A Family Tradition

In 1916, Morris Baumgarten arrived in New York with his Old World skills in “tin-knocking” and a work ethic to go with it. Morris began installing and repairing the tin roofs so prevalent in the city at the time.

     By 1925, sons-in-law Sam and Julius Yates joined the business, with Julius becoming the founder of a company specializing in sheet metal fabrication and repair. Soon, the company branched out into other forms of roofing and the repair of exterior masonry facades. Scaffolding at the time consisted of timber frames, bosun chairs, and wood platforms suspended from ropes and pulleys. With no modern-day safety devices, the work was extremely dangerous. Julius soon gained a reputation as a man of his word, a man who could get the job done right at the right price.

     So began a family enterprise that continued to expand and flourish under Julius’ sons Jerome and Ronald. After obtaining his Masters degree from MIT, and becoming a Professional Engineer, Jerome worked several years with Turner Construction before joining his father and later becoming President of the Yates Companies in 1974.

     After growing up in and around the business, Jerome’s son Michael graduated from Tuft’s University and began work as an engineering consultant before joining the family business full-time in 1988. Michael Yates would in 1996 become president of Yates Restoration Group..

     Throughout the years, the Yates companies have played an important role in restoring and maintaining the signature buildings of New York’s skyline. Expert exterior restoration and maintenance along with exceptional service are qualities that have become linked with the Yates name over four generations in New York City. We are proud of our past and present contributions to the preservation and restoration of New York’s architecture, and pledge to continue this tradition for years to come.
